While many posters take on a design similar to this one, I feel that the use of grids for this one in particular is effective. First off, the contrasting colors, separated by definitive lines, helps give the poster a sense of hierarchy.
For the picture in the top right corner, he appears to be looking down at the other three. The grid structure allows for this to be very effective, as it gives the top right Beatle his own defined space, making the fact that he is looking down towards the others very realistic and easy to conceptualize
I agree with you that this is very good use of grid system. I see the similarities between your post and mine, which used pop art as an example of the grid system. I think lots of art uses grid systems because of it efficient use of space, sense of wholeness and continuity in design.
