The Hearst Building is an example of a grid system. The grid system used for this building is called a diagrid. A diagrid creates triangular structures with diagonal support beams. The shape of the triangular windows and the medium size diamonds on the side is beautiful. Although it is difficult to see how the grid system is used from the finished product, the amount of detail put into the 46-story building wouldn't look as good if a grid was not implemented.
Just as Professor Taylor described in class, there is always a skeletal structure within an object; we just can't always see it. For this visual in particular, such a backbone is absolutely vital, and we can thank the grid structure for doing this.
ReplyDeleteI think the use of grid structure can be everywhere; this is a good example of diagrid used in building structure. The triangular shape of windows is very clever idea that makes the building more unique and creative.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Hearst Building is a good example of a diagrid. The building itself is a very unique, innovative structure.
